These two images are part of a group of four beings or creatures, where various elements, some non-human, some human, some supernatural, are mingled together. Why four creatures? I am an atheist, but my childhood was suffused with Bible stories and imagery, my father being an ordained Church in Wales minister. I was particularly interested in the four gospels, and in the book of Revelations, which of course contains the image of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. There is also, contained in the figures, a hint of stained-glass window. Some have seen the figures as angelic, or as Blakean. In art, unconscious elements will surface, bidden or unbidden.
